Michigan Election Results

Even after President Trump’s 2016 victory in Michigan, Democrats were optimistic about flipping the governorship and keeping their United States Senate seat in the state.

Gretchen Whitmer, a former Democratic leader in the Michigan Senate, won her race for governor against Attorney General Bill Schuette, a Republican endorsed by Mr. Trump. The water crisis in Flint, Mich., and the sex crimes committed by Dr. Larry Nassar, the former U.S.A. Gymnastics team doctor, had been issues in the campaign.

Senator Debbie Stabenow, the Democratic incumbent, won a fourth term. She faced a challenge from John James, who had impressed Republicans in Michigan and nationally. Mr. James is a West Point graduate who served in Iraq and whom Mr. Trump has repeatedly praised.

Representative Mike Bishop, a Republican whose district stretches westward from suburban Detroit, is up against an energized Democratic base that has donated heavily to the campaign of Elissa Slotkin, a first-time candidate and former Defense Department official.

Mr. Bishop has generally voted in line with President Trump. Ms. Slotkin has focused her campaign on health care issues. The district leans Republican, with a mix of affluent suburbs, rural farmland and more liberal-leaning areas around Lansing and East Lansing.

Two women seeking office for the first time are vying for the suburban Detroit seat held by Representative Dave Trott, a Republican who is not seeking another term. The district voted for President Trump, but Democrats are optimistic about the chances of Haley Stevens, a former chief of staff on President Barack Obama’s auto task force. The Republican nominee, Lena Epstein, is a businesswoman who helped manage Mr. Trump’s winning campaign in Michigan in 2016.
